Find your way

To the West Coast of Tasmania.

Queenstown hosts DIVERGE Skyruns. It’s an historic mining town on Tasmania’s West Coast. Surrounded by dramatic hills and of course, DIVERGE’s feature mountains, Mt Lyell and Mt Owen – they provide stark evidence of a history that once made Queenstown one of the richest mining towns in the world – but also stripped the landscapes bare, leaving behind a man-made moonscape.

Today, Queenstown is experiencing a rebirth with a growing arts culture, and tourism, including adventure tourism. Strahan, Zeehan, Rosebery and Tullah are all within an hour of Queenstown, and some of you might be staying there.

Go deeper into the West Coast. These are the places and activities handpicked to round out your DIVERGE experience.

Getting to Queenstown

Drive

Tasmania’s West Coast is remote. Drive via the Lyell or Murchison Highways and allow at least 4 hours on some windy roads to drive to the region from Launceston or Nipaluna/Hobart. Travel times can be longer than you expect. Mt Lyell Skyrun 50km, Mt Owen Skyrun 25km runners and Little Owen Trail runners/hikers should allow time to complete the Queenie Rogaine on Friday 30 April.

Ride Share

If you’re driving, consider sharing the ride with another runner. Join the DIVERGE Skyruns Facebook group to connect with other runners/hikers, make a plan and split the journey. And a note for when you get there. Queenstown is small and there are no taxis operating in the area.

Public Transport

There’s a bus service connecting West Coast towns and northern/southern Tasmania. Be sure to check the latest timetables and book ahead to secure your seat. Visit the Tasmanian Government Public transport page for the timetables (Burnie-Queenstown and Hobart-Queenstown services) and Area Connect, which runs a Hobart-Queenstown service.

Food & Drink

In Queenstown, dining comes with a West Coast rhythm — not everything is open when Google says it is. Call it West Coast time.

  • Friday: Buffet dinner including fresh, homemade pasta, at the Paragon Theatre (bookings required)
  • Saturday/Sunday: Food & drinks right near our DIVERGE venues, at local businesses like Tracks Cafe and Queenies Cribs
  • Groceries: The Evans IGA is open across the weekend
